Lars stomped the snow off her boots before she opened the door to the M&M Outfitters, the bell ringing merrily.

Kylie Brockhurst was sitting there looking like a modern-day Amazon in North Face. “Dude, Lars. How goes?”

“Good. Good. You?”

“Eh, wishing it was summer, you know?”

Lars had to laugh, because Kylie was her total opposite. Kylie was a rafting guide and the new manager at the Outfitters, living for the summer, the river, and the heat. Lars felt most alive in the winter, running with her dogs, selling her little chunk of Christmas, and playing in the snow. Took all kinds. “I brought Liz and Lupe my schedule so y’all can book my trips.”

She did a handful of dogsledding excursions for the tourists. It was a little money, fun, and gave the pups something to do.

“Oh yeah? They were just talking about you. It’s good somebody likes winter, right?” Kylie held her hand out for the schedule. “Have some coffee and warm up.”

“Thanks. How goes?” She knew Kylie had a new lover, but the rumor was she was running things at the fancy hotel. “You going to be in town for the holidays?”

“Me and Britt are going up to my folks’, and we’re meeting her mom there.” Kylie looked a little panicked around the edges.

“Whoa. Big stuff.” That was serious.

Kylie puffed out a breath. “It’ll be what it’ll be, you know? Do you know Frankie Hoffman? She’ll be here while I’m gone. Are you doing runs over the holidays?” Kylie looked down at her schedule.

“I’m taking off Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Otherwise, I’ll do four runs a week, two per team. Fourteen years old and up, with a signed form saying accidents happen.” It was standard and true. “I can also do runs for Evie and Cheyenne’s cabins, if they want.”

“Oh, nice. We have that waiver. I’ll adapt it for you. Do folks meet up near you, or here? I guess the runs are up your way, and the dogs so…” Kylie sat behind the desk, looking something up on the computer.

“I can haul over to the ranch or they can come to me. I only do the short rides with the kids at the bazaar. I don’t like to stress the dogs.” They were her friends, her family.

“Got it. I’ll pass your schedule on to the bosses and set up the waiver tomorrow. I’m done for the day. You want to get a beer?”

“God yes.” She wanted to sit and chill out for a few hours before she headed home to see the dogs and call Charlotte for a chat before bed. Between the bazaar, her high school best friend, and life, Lars hadn’t laid eyes on Charlotte for a couple-three days.

“Cool. I’ve got my Jeep. I’ll meet you where? Cherry’s? Whitewater?”

“Whitewater works. I’ll see you in a few.” She waved and headed out. This was still a relatively quiet time in Summit Springs—a time where the bulk of the population was local. It wouldn’t last long. After Christmas day, they’d start coming in again, pouring in through the summer and into fall.
